Maritime College of Guangdong Ocean University (formerly known as Navigation College and renamed in April 2019) was set up in August 2001. It is composed of party and administration office, semi-militarized management office, student affairs office, three teaching departments (Navigation Department, Marine Engineering Department, Shipping Management Department) and two practice training centers (Experimental Training Center and Crew Training Center). The college currently runs four undergraduate programs, namely navigation technology, marine engineering (onshore and offshore), marine electronic and electrical engineering and transportation. Navigation technology and marine engineering were among the traditional undergraduate majors of Guangdong Ocean University (GDOU) whose predecessors were fishing and marine engineering of Guangdong Advanced Fisheries Vocational College established in 1935. And the two majors have developed into marine fishery, navigation technology, marine engineering (onshore and offshore), transportation, etc. For decades, Maritime College has trained and produced many maritime professionals for the country. Mr. Chen Hongze, the captain of the first ocean-going vessel (Guanghua) after the founding of People’s Republic of China, was an early graduate of GDOU.
Maritime College boasts a team of high-quality faculties with rich teaching experience and strong ability of practice. There are 87 faculty members with 58 full-timers, including 4 professors, 21 with senior professional titles and 21 with deputy senior professional titles. Dual-qualification teachers account for 55%. Among them, there are 7 first-class captain certificate holders, 6 chief officers, 6 first-class chief engineers and 3 second engineers for the unrestricted navigation areas; and there is 1 captain, 2 chief officers and 2 first-class second engineers for coastal navigation areas. The college will continue to adopt a scientific approach to expand the faculty team, optimize the professional structure, strengthen scientific management, update college-running concept and improve the college-running conditions, and build the college into an important base for navigation education and crew training with a certain scale and level.
Maritime College has experimental (training) equipment funds of more than 80 million yuan and has built a navigation technology comprehensive laboratory, a marine engineering comprehensive laboratory, a transportation comprehensive laboratory and an aquatic training center. The experimental training center (Navigation Skills Training Center) of the college is an experimental teaching demonstration center of Guangdong Province and its venue, facilities and equipment fully meet the standard requirements of the " Seafarer Training Management Regulations of the People’s Republic of China ". GDOU passed the crew training system certification of the Maritime Safety Administration of the People's Republic of China in 2003.
Maritime College currently has 1,856 full-time undergraduate students and a semi-militarized management system is implemented for maritime students. The college adheres to the work philosophy of "student-oriented talent cultivating" with the pursuit of students' all-round development as the starting point of student guidance and service, focusing on perfecting their personality, instructing them in study, and improving their quality. By organizing students to participate in activities such as "China Navigation Day", navigation model design competition and nautical science popularization competition，the college endeavors to help students understand the significance of the ocean and its relation to maritime power, and deeply integrate into the "Belt and Road" initiative and the strategy of maritime power, cultivating their enthusiasm for the ocean and navigation and enabling them to gradually establish the awareness of maritime national defense and strengthen the belief in "Navigation Dream-My Dream". The college actively carries out social practice activities; the practice teams go deep into the grassroots level and good results have been achieved.
For a long time, the development of the college has been strongly supported by the competent departments at all levels and people from all walks of life. With the joint efforts of the leadership of the college and all the faculty and staff, the employment quality of graduates has been continuously improved. Against the background of the strategic deployment of "building a maritime power" and the "One Belt One Road" initiative, the college will stick to the development concept of "innovation, harmony, openness and international integration", fully implement the three major aspects of "connotative development, characteristic development and innovative development" and strive to build a teaching-research oriented college with distinctive marine characteristics.
